History

The history of Bobcat can be traced back to 1947 when E.G. Melroe founded the Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota. Following his death in 1955, his sons took over the company and eventually met inventors Cyril and Louis Keller in 1958.

The Kellers were known for repairing farm equipment. That was until a customer complained about how difficult it was to clean the second story of his turkey barn. This prompted the Kellers to build a front-end loader that went on to garner massive success. The brothers were soon employed by Melroe.

In 1962, the company’s M440, a loader with the name Bobcat, hit the market. Other machines soon followed and were known as Big Bob or Mini-Bob. This prompted the company to change its name to Bobcat to reflect its new primary brand identity.
